Remember that one time I wrote a slightly stuffy About Me page? If not, you can find it here. It’s not that what was stated was untrue but it didn’t encompass who I am, what my passions are and how I deal with the everyday struggle of whose vibe I’m channeling; Ella Fitzgerald or Rick Ross. [Insert emoji of girl with hands in the air]
If you looked up the definition for Eclectic, followed by Prodigy, you’d have my vision for this venture right there…don’t worry I’ve already done the work for you.
Now I didn’t add in the dramatic adjectives [ i.e. exceptional ] that was all Webster, but there is something to say about including them as a way to describe my drive to be just that, consistently.
Growing up, the desire to explore and grow my appreciation for what lie outside of the Midwest [North Dakota…Forman…Population <500] allowed me to be open to diving into the unknown, taking a job I had never done, talking to someone I didn’t know, going somewhere I had never been…alone.
I think too often we are caught up in tailoring ourselves to one niche or style and not absorbing what other cultures or industries offer. When you get over yourself and jump into that sea of variety, you’ll notice just how many elements make up and inspire one another. I’m an advocate for juxtaposing just about anything. The idea around mixing and contrasting aesthetics is a dream for an indecisive mind. [i.e. Sure, let’s hang a portrait of Queen Elizabeth in the living room. But only if she’s wearing a grill.]
The word ‘favorite’ is used quite loosely in my vocabulary. So if you were to ask me “Aarika, what’s your favorite wine…color…restaurant…city…designer…artist?” it would likely be a different answer based on where I was. [Except if you asked me my favorite print…leopard…no matter where I am] And that’s the beauty I see in creating and styling a space. Whether it’s a home, an office, a retail shop, you name it, the space should evoke an emotion or reaction but also serve a purpose.
Creating spaces and presentations has opened up many doors for me over the past ten years; New York City, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle, London…Fargo, just to name a few. Throughout these jobs and travels, I’ve learned to understand the importance of listening to one another, soaking up your surroundings, inspiring others to look outside of their box and stepping out of mine.
One thing I will copy and paste from my stuffy page is this…“My diligence to create strong presentations to captivate customers and clients through the aesthetic and functionality of space is at the forefront of the process.” Developing and creating an eclectic, bold and savvy space is my passion…along with wine tasting, hip-hop, golfing and big hair.
